China’s Participation at the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP17) in Armenia

Against the backdrop of COP17—the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) hosted for the first time in Armenia—China emerged as a pivotal contributor to both negotiations and implementation. COP17 President Hambardzum Matevosyan explicitly credited China’s leadership, tracing its influence from the pre-conference Kunming Dialogue to the ongoing review of collective progress.

Beyond diplomacy, China operationalized its commitments through the Kunming Biodiversity Fund, to which it has contributed 400 million yuan (60 million dollars); during COP17, the Fund’s Executive Council approved nine conservation projects worth roughly 4.5 million dollars, including initiatives in Armenia.

China further anchored its presence with a dedicated Pavilion opened by Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu, hosting thematic side events and exhibitions on biodiversity achievements. This engagement extended to bilateral cooperation, with China and Armenia already collaborating on national parks and protected areas. China’s role at COP17 thus combined high-level negotiation facilitation, tangible financial mechanisms, and direct partnership with the host nation.
