Avetik Isahakyan and China: Public Lecture and Exhibition Opening

Avetik Isahakyan and China: Public Lecture and Exhibition Opening

In the house-museum of the renowned Armenian poet Avetik Isahakyan (1875–1957), among his manuscripts and books, stand small figurines from East Asia—Buddhist statues, Daoist deities, and images of Chinese sages. These objects, often overlooked as mere decoration, tell a story that goes far beyond aesthetics. Isahakyan, like many Armenian intellectuals of his generation, was deeply engaged with the cultural and philosophical traditions of the East, a fascination reflected in his poem Abu Lala Mahari. What is less known, however, is that this engagement was not merely literary—it was material. He collected. He displayed. And through these objects, he constructed a dialogue with China that unfolded not in books, but in the intimate space of his own home. This collection has never been studied as a coherent whole. Drawing on rare archival materials preserved in the house-museum, this lecture uncovers that hidden narrative for the first time. Through these objects, Isahakyan created a meeting of civilizations—a space where Armenian poetry and Chinese philosophy, Soviet modernity and ancient wisdom, could coexist in quiet conversation. Speaker: Ani Margaryan, PhD in Art History; Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Art, Soochow University; Member of the Armenian Society of Fellows, the Society for Armenian Studies, and the Art Committee of the World Eco-Design Organisation; Founder of ChinArmArt; Co-founder of ChinArmNet; Diaspora Youth Ambassador to China, 2024–2025.

140th Canton Fair 2026: Key Dates and Locations for Armenian Entrepreneurs

140th Canton Fair 2026: Key Dates and Locations for Armenian Entrepreneurs

Officially known as the China Import and Export Fair, the Canton Fair is China's largest and longest-running comprehensive international trade event, which first opened its doors in April 1957. The upcoming 140th Canton Fair will take place from October 15 to November 4, 2026, at the expansive China Import and Export Fair Complex on Pazhou Island in Guangzhou. This prestigious event represents a premier matchmaking platform for Sino-Armenian business partnerships, offering Armenian enterprises unprecedented access to global suppliers and innovative manufacturing technologies. To maximize sourcing efficiency across the venue's massive footprint, the exhibition is structured into three specialized five-day phases targeting specific industry sectors and complex zones. Phase 1 (October 15–19, 2026) takes place in Area A and Area B of the complex, focusing on advanced manufacturing, electronics, household electrical appliances, machinery, and new energy solutions. Phase 2 (October 23–27, 2026) centers on Area C of the complex, showcasing daily consumer goods, quality home life items, building materials, furniture, housewares, ceramics, and structural decorations. Phase 3 (October 31–November 4, 2026) covers lifestyle sectors in Area D of the complex, highlighting textiles, apparel, food products, office supplies, medical devices, and health goods. Registration and Entry Entry to the Canton Fair requires advance registration through the official Canton Fair website or onsite registration for international buyers. International visitors typically need a valid passport and visa; a special Canton Fair invitation letter can support the visa application. The registration fee for international buyers is generally around 300–500 RMB per phase, though pricing may vary slightly by session and timing. Registration gives access to all exhibition areas and most onsite business services. Getting to the Venue The China Import and Export Fair Complex is conveniently located on Pazhou Island. The most efficient way to reach the venue is by Guangzhou Metro: take Line 8 and exit at Pazhou Station or Xingang Dong Station, both of which directly serve the complex. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as DiDi are also widely available, especially from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, which is approximately 45–60 minutes away by car depending on traffic. Nearby Hotels Several internationally recognized hotels are located within walking distance or a short metro ride from the fair complex. Convenient options include: The Westin Pazhou — directly connected to the exhibition area (approx. 1,500–3,000 RMB/night during the fair) Shangri-La Guangzhou — approximately one metro stop or a short taxi ride away (approx. 1,200–2,500 RMB/night during the fair) Langham Place Guangzhou — nearby in the Pazhou area (approx. 1,000–2,000 RMB/night during the fair) Ramada Plaza Guangzhou — a short metro ride from the complex (approx. 800–1,500 RMB/night during the fair) Guangzhou Jinhan Exhibition Centre Hotel — a practical mid-range option in the immediate area (approx. 500–1,000 RMB/night during the fair) Because hotel availability decreases rapidly during the fair, it is strongly recommended to book accommodation well in advance.
